The second annual Ryan Walker Memorial Scholarship breakfast/lunch in conjunction with the Stayton Summerfest Car Show was a great success and raised approximately $2000 to $2500 for the scholarship fund.
The fundraiser is to support the scholarship established by the Stayton Volunteer Protection Company #1 to honor Ryan Walker, a U.S. Army medic, who died January 5, 2006. Ryan was killed in Baghdad Iraq while rushing to give aid to soldiers injured by an improvised explosive device, when a second IED detonated near him. Ryan served the Stayton Fire District as a resident volunteer while attending Chemeketa to obtain his Fire Protection Degree.
In attendance for the second year was Ryan’s brother, Steven, who brought his pickup that is painted in a tribute to Ryan and his service in the military and fire service. In attendance this year for the first time was Ryan’s mother.
Pioneer Park provided a beautiful backdrop for the event, where 211 cars entered into the car show and District Volunteers served 603 people breakfast and 198 people lunch.( Last year we served 492 for breakfast and just over 100 for lunch.) A good turnout by volunteers to serve the meals made the day fun and contributed to the success of the day.
The total from both years in the scholarship fund is approximately $4,000. The scholarship was established for the purpose of providing monetary assistance to individuals interested in pursuing a degree in emergency services.
