Grass fire along Washington Street

Fire on Washington
Grass fire
The Stayton Fire District has been facing some of the worst fire conditions in many years, a crew from the Stayton Station was able to quickly extinguish a fire Tuesday afternoon along West Washington Street.

The cause of the fire is from a brush pile burn, which ignited an area about 100 feet long and 50 feet wide in a difficult to access field adjoining some storage property. The fire burned to within a few feet of the property which would have sustained substantial loss had it been affected.

Jack Carriger, the Stayton Fire District Chief noticed the fire shortly after noon and the call came through dispatch at 12:14pm. Chief Carriger saw the fire and was able to notify dispatch and responding units of the location, size and resources needed. Stayton Fire was joined by Aumsville Fire District to help extinguish the fire.

Fire conditions remain extreme throughout the area. We would like to remind everyone that the burn ban is still in effect until at least October 15th, but is subject to change based on weather conditions. If you want to know if today is a burn day, you can call the burn line at 503-769-3400. For more information, please contact Chief Jack Carriger or Assistant Chief Jay Alley at 503-769-2601.
