Annually, the Stayton Fire District rewards one scholarship to an individual interested in pursuing a degree in emergency services, including Fire Protection, Emergency Medical Services, Arson Investigation, Fire Prevention Services and related subjects at an accredited College or University of their choice.

The Ryan Walker Memorial Scholarship was established in memory of Ryan Walker, a U.S. Army Medic, who died January 5, 2006. Ryan was killed in Baghdad, Iraq, while rushing to give aid to soldiers injured by an improvised explosive device, when a second IED detonated near him.

Ryan served the Stayton Fire District as a Resident Volunteer while attending Chemeketa Community College to obtain his Fire Protection Degree.

This years recipient of the Ryan Walker Scholarship is Brandon Hansen. Brandon has been a volunteer member with the Stayton Fire District at the Mehama Station since March of 2010. Brandon was recently accepted into medic school and is pursuing his Paramedic Certification.

Congratulations on a well deserved scholarship Brandon!
