Stayton Firefighters respond to garage fire 11/4/2011

Garage Fire
Locust St. Garage Fire
Firefighters from Stayton Fire and Sublimity Fire were dispatched at 3:12am on Nov 4, 2011 for a detached garage fire on Locust St. in Stayton. 2 engines responded in addition to 1 ladder, 2 command vehicles and approx 15 firefighters. The fire was quickly confined to just the garage and the contents inside and was caused by the misuse of power strips and extension cords. The estimated cost of damage was approximately $10,000 to the structure and $5,000 in contents. There were no injuries to occupants or firefighters.

It's important to remember that when using power strips and extension cords to follow manufacture recommendations and not use a power strip plugged into another power strip. Also, when using portable heaters during the winter months plug them directly into a power outlet and not a power strip, and keep the heater a safe distance away from any combustible materials.
