Career:

As of September 2018 Chief Jack Carriger completed 42 years of emergency services. He began his emergency service career with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office where he spent ten years as a Reserve Sergeant. After leaving the Sheriff’s Office Chief Carriger entered the fire service, spending the next ten years with Marion County Fire District #1 as a volunteer Firefighter and Lieutenant.

While with MCFD#1 he was hired as the Fire Chief of Nestucca Fire District where he spent the following six years restructuring and revitalizing the District.

After a long involved hiring process, in September 2002, Chief Carriger was selected as the top candidate and offered the position of Fire Chief for Stayton Fire District. During his tenure as Fire Chief in Stayton; Chief Carriger has played a very active role in the operations of Santiam Canyon Communications Center, including Interim Director while the center performed a search and hiring process for a new Director.

Affiliations:

Locally the Chief is a member of Stayton Lions and Rotary Clubs, Marion County Fire Defense Board, Marion County Interoperability Committee, and Santiam Canyon Communications Center Executive Board.  He also assists with announcing Stayton High School Football games.

At the state level Chief Carriger is an active member of the Oregon Fire Chiefs Association and Oregon Volunteer Firefighters Association and is a Past President. He has also served on many state fire service committees. Chief Carriger also served seven years as a member and on the Executive Committee of The Board of Public Safety Standards and Training.

Nationally Chief Carriger acted as the 2nd Vice-Chair of the National Volunteer Fire Council and is a current member of both the AFG/SAFER Grant Criteria Development Committee and Strategic Planning Committee. He is also a member of the International Association of Fire Chiefs as well as the Western Fire Chiefs Association.

Education:

Chief Carriger has an A.A.S. Degree in Fire Science Technology from Southwestern Oregon Community College. In addition to his degree Chief Carriger has a number of professional certifications and has attended many classes at the National Fire Academy.
