Staying Safe in the Kitchen

It is once again that time of year when we tend to spend more time in the kitchen cooking and enjoying time together with our families.  Stayton Fire District would like to remind you that kitchen fires are the second leading cause of home fires in our area at this time of year, so please take a few minutes to remind yourself about ways to stay safe in the kitchen.

Remember to:
  • Keep things that can burn away from your stove top

  • Stay in the kitchen when cooking

  • Heat oil slowly and never leave it unattended

  • Keep a cookie sheet or lid nearby to slide over a pan fire, then turn off the burner

  • In the event of an oven fire, turn off the oven and keep the door closed

  • Close the door behind you when you exit to help contain the fire

  • Call 9-1-1, after you exit
We also encourage you to plan ahead by practicing your fire escape plan, so everyone gets out quickly and safely when seconds count.
